Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 batch chocolate frosting
  • Black or red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, stack and frost the cake with chocolate frosting.
  8. Mix black or red food coloring with a small portion of frosting. Use a piping bag to create the handprint design on top.
  9. Chill for 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a more dramatic effect, use red frosting for a blood-like handprint.
  • Add edible glitter or sprinkles for extra spookiness.
  • Store the cake in the refrigerator if not serving immediately.
