Ingredients
Scale
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water
1 batch chocolate frosting
Black or red food coloring (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
Stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin.
Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, stack and frost the cake with chocolate frosting.
Mix black or red food coloring with a small portion of frosting. Use a piping bag to create the handprint design on top.
Chill for 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a more dramatic effect, use red frosting for a blood-like handprint.
Add edible glitter or sprinkles for extra spookiness.
Store the cake in the refrigerator if not serving immediately.
