  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp black food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  3. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, egg, food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients until smooth.
  5. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full.
  6. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for a deep black color.
  • Substitute buttermilk with 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar if needed.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
