Shrimp and grits

Shrimp and grits is a classic Southern dish that combines creamy grits with succulent shrimp, often seasoned with spices and served with a rich sauce.

  • 1 cup grits
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a pot, bring water to a boil and add grits. Cook according to package instructions until creamy.
  2. In a skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
  3. Add shrimp to the skillet and season with garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until shrimp are pink and cooked through.
  4. Stir in chicken broth and heavy cream, bringing to a simmer. Add butter and mix until melted.
  5. Serve the shrimp mixture over the cooked grits and garnish with bacon and green onions.

  • For a spicier version, add cayenne pepper to the shrimp mixture.
  • Use low-sodium chicken broth for a healthier option.
  • Grits can be made ahead of time and reheated before serving.
