World’s Best Lasagna

A rich and hearty lasagna with layers of pasta, meat sauce, and cheese. Perfect for family dinners or gatherings.

  • 1 pound sweet Italian sausage
  • 3/4 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup minced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cans (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 2 cans (6.5 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 16 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until browned.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons parsley. Simmer for 1 hour.
  4. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8-10 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water.
  5. Mix ricotta cheese, egg, and remaining parsley in a bowl.
  6. Layer 1/3 of the meat sauce, 6 noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Repeat layers, ending with meat sauce and cheese.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 25 minutes.
  8. Let cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Let lasagna rest to set before cutting.
  • Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months.
  • Substitute cottage cheese for ricotta if needed.
